Genealogy

I am a native Hungarian, living close to my birthplace in northern Hungary. I grew up in the countryside known as the Mountain Uplands of Bükk (literally “Beech”). This beautiful region consists of small villages nestled in the North Hungarian Mountains, part of the Inner Western Carpathians on the northern side of the country.

I have been conducting local historical research for more than fourty years. After spending decades studying local lore, I discovered old documents mentioning historical family names connected to my ancestors. Since then, I have been seriously researching my family roots in this micro-region. I consider myself a hobby genealogist, uncovering both my own family history and the genealogies of local families in the Bükk Mountain Uplands.

My paternal family name is Barta, so I began researching that branch in detail. So far, I have identified 26 sub-branches or nickname variants of the Barta family name in three nearby villages: Sáta, Bóta, and Uppony, as well as in Nekézseny, Csokva, Omány, Daróc, and the town of Ózd.

My research mainly focuses on the period around 1850, corresponding to my great-great-grandparents’ generation. Among my ancestors, I have found several who emigrated to the United States and appear in the Ellis Island immigration records.

So, if you think we might share common ancestors, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Here’s a short story from 2015: someone in the United States once registered a PayPal account — an everyday thing. Why mention this? Because that person accidentally registered it using my own email address: zbarta@… (an obvious mistake). As a result, I began receiving all of their US PayPal notifications, local ads, and offers. I still don’t know what the “Z” in that account stands for — but one thing is certain: there are Bartas in the United States!
